THE local government of Taguig is preparing for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of “Brigada Eskwela”, a volunteer program of the Department of Education (DepEd) aimed to ensure readiness of all public schools and educational facilities for the annual starting of classes in June.
According to PIO Chief Lito Laparan, Mayor Lani Cayetano will lead this year’s National Schools Maintenance Week, better known as “Brigada Eskwela,” with a slew of activities from Monday, May 20, to Saturday, May 25 in the city.
The re-elected Mayor encouraged all stakeholders to participate in this voluntary effort of teachers, parents and village officials in preparing all public schools for the opening of classes.
Cayetano urged the community to donate their time on the said program which will benefit more children this year where DepEd cited Taguig as one best producer of quality education since 2011.
The Monday celebration will highlight the marching of around 3,000 volunteers, students, teachers and parents from St. Francis of Assisi College, the Sta. Theresa Elementary School, Bagumbayan National High School and the Mayor herself.
“Mayor Cayetano will handle the carpentry of unusable school chairs, tables and other facilities,” DepEd Special Events Coordinator Nestor Ramos said.
The city government announced that all public elementary schools in Taguig are expected to participate in the week-long program, which was institutionalized by the DepEd under DepEd Order No. 24 issued in 2008.
Last year, Brigada Eskwela introduced school sanitation and hygiene by way of installing new toilet and wash bowls facilities.
Likewise, the city government will dispense complete sets of ready-to-wear school uniforms and other paraphernalia such as bag, new pairs of shoes to public school students, from pre-school to high school starting this June.
Cayetano plans to expand her scholarship program this year with a whooping budget of P300M compared to P200M last year.
